Case Study: Queen’s University, Belfast
Founded by Queen Victoria in 1845, Queen’s University Belfast is one of the oldest universities in the UK. With the heart of its campus located close to the centre of Belfast, the university has in excess of 23,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. Notable alumni include poet and Nobel prize winner Seamus Heaney, inventor of the portable heart defibrillator Frank Pantridge and actor Liam Neeson OBE.
Historic Queen’s University Belfast is famed for its magnificent central building, the Lanyon Building. Completed in 1849 the building was designed by prominent 19th century architect Sir Charles Lanyon and is renowned as one of Belfast’s most important pieces of architecture.
The Queen’s University Belfast campus, which contains over 300 buildings, provides accommodation for over 2,000 students in a variety of locations. Ranked by the Telegraph in 2015 as one of the top 10 UK universities for accommodation, Queen’s has a reputation for providing excellent student accommodation at competitive costs.
In 2015, Queen’s University’s Estates Department were tasked with the refurbishment of existing student accommodation located within a Grade B listed Victorian terrace.
The renovation project involved a full property refurbishment including the replacement of 17 student shower rooms. Keen to install low-maintenance, durable and long-lasting showering solutions, which would benefit the university’s student population, online research led to Coram’s unique range of ShowerPods; fast fit showering solutions available in a large range of sizes, styles and colours.
Following an invitation to tender Coram submitted a proposal for the 17 shower rooms, identifying their adaptable ShowerPods solution as a perfect fit for the student accommodation. The contract was awarded to Coram for 17 bright blue Alcove ShowerPods by Queen’s University Belfast.
Coram ShowerPods are designed and manufactured in the UK. Made from GRP (glass reinforced polymer), the overlapping construction of the ShowerPods ensures they’re leak free. Featuring toughened safety glass and magnetically sealed doors ShowerPods are perfectly suited to high use areas. The shiny gel coat surface of the ShowerPods is easy to clean, and no tiling means there are no grout lines to discolour or deteriorate; ideal when low-maintenance is a high priority.
When it comes to installation, ShowerPods are perfect for compact spaces, as each model can be fitted within its own footprint. Fully-installed and functioning within a matter of hours, ShowerPods provided Queen’s University Belfast with attractive, modern and versatile showering solutions for their student accommodation refurbishment.
